The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the National Institutes of Health recommend two proven therapies for chronic insomnia, doctor-prescribed sleep medicine – which should be restricted to short-term use, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for insomnia. There isn’t enough scientific evidence on other treatments, like over-the-counter products or herbal remedies, to prove that they actually work or to be able to rule out any safety concerns.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is a preferred treatment choice for chronic insomnia. CBT-I works by helping individuals identify and change the thoughts, habits and behaviors that can cause or worsen their sleep problems. We know sleep medications have a risk of dependency or adverse side effects. But, cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia focuses on helping people overcome the underlying cause of their sleep problem, so they can keep sleeping better even after their CBT-I sessions end.
Unfortunately, the availability of certified behavioral sleep therapists is very limited, and face-to-face office visits are often inconvenient. Our SHUTi program addresses this issue by providing you with a scientifically validated insomnia program modeled after highly successful face-to-face CBT techniques all from the comfort of your home and at a special discounted rate when using our Clinical Code.
SHUTi, short for Sleep Healthy Using the Internet, is a structured six-week program for adults with insomnia that can be completed entirely online—from the privacy and convenience of home. The program combines Cognitive Behavioral Therapy strategies with personalized sleep recommendations keyed to each user’s individual sleep patterns. The interactive program is straightforward and easy to follow. Many patients have reported significant improvements in their sleep in a matter of weeks, even those who’ve suffered for years with insomnia and feel they’ve tried everything.
The program starts with a How To Use Tutorial to give you an overview of the program and then you will begin with the Overview Session to help you evaluate your own sleep problems and treatment goals.
Each week a new concept is introduced and all are completed online from the privacy and convenience of home. There are five more sessions, or Cores, each focused on specific methods for improving the quantity and quality of your sleep.
Each of these Cores takes about 45 – 60 minutes to complete. Once you’ve completed a Core, you’ll work over the next 7 days to incorporate the strategies and techniques you have learned into your daily routine. Then, a new Core will be unlocked. You’ll be able review your completed Cores and print out helpful materials for the full length of your subscription.
Every day you will be asked to complete a short, 3-minute online daily Sleep Diary, allowing SHUTi to make personalized recommendations. Weekly graphs will help you understand your personal sleep improvement progress.
To get started, simply make an appointment with one of our Board Certified Sleep Physicians. During the appointment, our Sleep Physician will determine is SHUTi is right for you. If so, after being given the SHUTi instructions and our Clinical Code you will be able to begin the program. Our Clinical Code will allow us to track your progress online as well as provide you with a price discount. Once you have completed the SHUTi program you will again meet with your Sleep Physician to discuss your progress and determine if the next step.
